§  Bangladesh earthquake today: 5.5 magnitude quake near Narsingdi shakes Kolkata. Breaking news, USGS reports, safety guidelines and real-time earthquake updates

Kolkata, November 21, 2025: A powerful earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck near Dhaka, Bangladesh on Friday morning, November 21, 2025, sending strong tremors across Kolkata and multiple districts in West Bengal. The seismic event, which occurred at 10:08 AM IST (04:38 UTC), caused widespread panic as thousands of people rushed out of buildings across the region.

Epicenter Located in Narsingdi, Bangladesh

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake’s epicenter was located approximately 14 kilometers west-southwest of Narsingdi, near Dhaka, Bangladesh. The tremor occurred at a shallow depth of just 10 kilometers below the Earth’s surface, which explains why the shaking was felt so intensely across a wide geographical area. Shallow earthquakes typically cause more noticeable ground shaking than deeper ones because seismic waves don’t have to travel as far to reach the surface.

The USGS, which operates a global earthquake monitoring system using advanced seismograph networks, confirmed the magnitude and provided detailed coordinates showing the epicenter at 23.894°N latitude and 90.579°E longitude. The organization’s real-time monitoring capabilities allow for rapid detection and analysis of seismic events worldwide.

Widespread Impact Across West Bengal Districts

The earthquake sent tremors rippling across multiple districts in West Bengal with residents reporting noticeable shaking that lasted between 10 to 20 seconds. In Kolkata, India’s cultural capital, people in high-rise buildings experienced particularly strong shaking, with furniture, ceiling fans and hanging objects swaying visibly.

Beyond Kolkata, the tremors were strongly felt in several other West Bengal districts including Malda, Nadia, Cooch Behar, Dakshin Dinajpur (South Dinajpur) and the Siliguri region. The widespread impact extended to northeastern Indian cities including Guwahati, Agartala and Shillong, demonstrating the extensive reach of this seismic event.

Social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter) were immediately flooded with posts from residents across the region describing their experiences. One user wrote, “That earthquake lasted over 30 seconds and was very powerful,” while another stated, “This is the most terrifying earthquake I have ever felt”. Many users shared videos showing objects shaking in their homes, with lamps, bottles and furniture visibly moving during the tremor.

Understanding the Richter Scale Measurement

The Richter scale, developed in 1935 by American seismologist Charles Richter, measures earthquake magnitude on a base-10 logarithmic scale. This means each whole number increase represents a tenfold increase in wave amplitude and approximately 31.6 times more energy release.

A 5.5 magnitude earthquake falls into the “moderate” category, capable of causing damage to poorly constructed buildings while generally causing zero to slight damage to well-built structures. According to the Richter scale classification, earthquakes of this magnitude are felt by everyone in the affected area and occur approximately 1,000 to 1,500 times per year globally.

The shallow depth of 10 kilometers significantly amplified the earthquake’s impact on the surface. Earthquakes are classified by depth into three categories: shallow (0-70 km), intermediate (70-300 km) and deep (300-700 km) with shallow earthquakes typically producing the strongest surface shaking.

Immediate Response and Panic Scenes

As the tremors struck, panic gripped the densely populated urban centers across the region. In Kolkata, office workers, residents and students evacuated buildings en masse, gathering on streets and open spaces. Video footage from India Today showed crowds of people standing outside their offices and residential buildings, visibly shaken by the experience.

At Dhaka University in Bangladesh, students rushed out of their hostels in fear, immediately calling family members in different parts of the country to check on their safety. The Bangladesh-Ireland Test cricket match being played in Dhaka was briefly interrupted, though play resumed after a few minutes once the shaking subsided.

The sudden nature of the earthquake caught many people off guard during their morning routines. Social media users described the moment of panic with one person sharing, “My first thought was ‘I am going to die while looking like a homeless person,’” reflecting the unexpected timing of the disaster.

Safety Guidelines During Earthquakes

·       Earthquake safety experts emphasize the importance of following the “Drop, Cover and Hold On” protocol during seismic events.

·       Dropping down onto hands and knees before the earthquake knocks you down, which protects you from falling while allowing movement if necessary.

·       Covering your head and neck underneath a sturdy table or desk or near an interior wall away from windows if no shelter is available.

·       Holding on to your shelter until the shaking stops, being prepared to move with it if necessary.

Critical safety rules include staying inside if you’re indoors when an earthquake strikes - do not run outside, as most injuries occur from falling debris near building exits. If outdoors, move to an open space away from buildings, trees, streetlights and power lines.

Experts strongly caution against panic reactions. Historical data from Bangladesh shows that during past earthquakes, more casualties resulted from panic-related incidents than from the earthquake itself. In 2016, at least three people died in Bangladesh during an earthquake primarily due to heart attacks triggered by panic and injuries sustained while rushing out of buildings.

No Major Damage or Casualties Reported

Fortunately, initial reports from both Bangladesh and India indicate no major structural damage or casualties from this earthquake. Authorities in West Bengal confirmed that while the tremors caused significant alarm, buildings remained structurally sound and no injuries were reported.

The relatively moderate magnitude of 5.5, combined with modern building construction standards in urban areas like Kolkata, helped prevent serious damage. However, authorities continue monitoring the situation for potential aftershocks, which commonly follow significant seismic events.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department and weather monitoring teams provided rapid updates through official channels, helping to calm public anxiety by confirming the earthquake’s parameters and epicenter location.

Bangladesh’s Earthquake Vulnerability

Bangladesh sits at the intersection of three major tectonic plates, making it one of the world’s most seismically active and vulnerable regions. Over the past 50 years, the country has experienced more than 250 earthquakes, some exceeding 6.0 in magnitude, causing substantial loss of life and infrastructure damage.

Dhaka, the capital city with a population exceeding 6 million in the metropolitan area, ranks among the 20 cities worldwide most vulnerable to earthquakes according to Stanford University’s Earthquake Disaster Risk Index. The city’s rapid urbanization, high population density exceeding 60,000 people per square kilometer in some wards, and limited open evacuation spaces significantly increase the potential for casualties during major seismic events.

Seismological research indicates that if a major earthquake similar to the 1897 Great Indian Earthquake (magnitude 8.1) were to occur again with Dhaka near its epicenter, it could damage approximately 28% of buildings and result in casualties affecting 3.7% of the total population. This sobering projection underscores the critical importance of earthquake preparedness measures in the region.

Expert Analysis and Seismic Context

The United States Geological Survey’s rapid response system detected and analyzed this earthquake within minutes of its occurrence. Using a global network of seismograph stations, the USGS can pinpoint earthquake locations with remarkable precision, typically within 5 millimeters of accuracy.

The shallow depth of this earthquake - just 10 kilometers - is particularly significant in seismological terms. Shallow earthquakes generate more intense surface waves that cause the noticeable shaking felt by residents. These waves, including primary P-waves and secondary S-waves, travel at different speeds through the Earth’s crust, allowing seismologists to calculate the exact location and depth of the epicenter.

Modern earthquake monitoring systems also track ground deformation using GPS technology, which can detect movements as small as 5 millimeters near active fault lines. This technology helps scientists understand tectonic plate movements and potentially predict future seismic activity patterns.

Regional Seismic Activity Pattern

This earthquake adds to a pattern of seismic activity in the South Asian region during 2025. Earlier in the morning on the same day, two separate earthquakes struck Pakistan and Afghanistan - a magnitude 4.2 quake in Afghanistan at 1:59 AM IST and a magnitude 5.2 quake in Pakistan at 3:09 AM IST. Additionally, a magnitude 4.3 earthquake was recorded in the Indian Ocean region at around 2:41 AM.

The concentration of seismic events in this region reflects the ongoing collision between the Indian tectonic plate and the Eurasian plate, a process that has been occurring for millions of years and continues to generate frequent earthquakes across the Himalayan belt and surrounding areas.

Social Media Response and Digital Awareness

The earthquake highlighted how social media has transformed disaster response and public awareness. Within minutes of the tremors, hashtags related to the earthquake began trending on X and Instagram. Users shared real-time experiences, videos and safety check-ins, creating a crowdsourcing effect for situational awareness.

Hashtags like #EarthquakeToday, #KolkataEarthquake and #BangladeshEarthquake dominated trending topics with thousands of posts generating community-driven updates faster than traditional news sources could report. This digital response demonstrates the crucial role social platforms now play in disaster communication and public safety awareness.

Many users also shared earthquake safety memes and educational content, helping to spread awareness about proper safety protocols while also providing comic relief to ease post-tremor anxiety. This combination of serious information sharing and stress-relieving humor has become characteristic of how communities process and respond to natural disasters in the digital age.

Conclusion: Preparedness is Key

This 5.5 magnitude earthquake serves as a stark reminder of the seismic vulnerability of the Bangladesh-West Bengal region and the critical importance of earthquake preparedness. While this particular event fortunately resulted in no casualties or major damage, it underscores the need for continued vigilance, robust building codes and public education about earthquake safety protocols.

Residents in seismically active zones should familiarize themselves with Drop, Cover and Hold On procedures, identify safe spots in their homes and workplaces and maintain emergency kits. Communities and governments must invest in earthquake-resistant infrastructure, early warning systems, and disaster response capabilities to minimize casualties when larger seismic events inevitably occur.

The rapid dissemination of accurate information by organizations like the USGS and local meteorological departments, combined with responsible social media usage, plays a vital role in managing public response during and after earthquakes. As Bangladesh and eastern India continue to face earthquake risks, a culture of preparedness and informed response will be essential for protecting lives and property.
