Israel and Hamas Agree to Ceasefire After Delay.

A temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas began in Gaza on Sunday at 9:15 AM GMT delayed by nearly three hours. The truce brokered by mediators is part of a deal to release hostages and prisoners after months of conflict.
Context
The ceasefire was initially planned to start at 6:30 AM GMT but was delayed due to last minute decisions. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed the military to wait until the list of hostages to be freed was finalised. Hamas also cited “technical reasons” and ongoing strikes as causes for the delay.
During this period Israeli airstrikes in Gaza resulted in the deaths of eight civilians and injured 25 others according to Gaza’s civil defence. Smoke could be seen rising in multiple areas even as the truce was about to begin.
Under the agreement three Israeli hostages were released on Sunday with more to follow during the truce period. In exchange hundreds of Palestinian prisoners will be freed from Israeli jails.
Impact on Gaza Residents
Many displaced Palestinians had hoped to return home but were stopped by continued strikes during the delay.
Mohammed Baraka a resident said, “I was on my way home with my family when the bombing started again. We are frustrated and feel hopeless.”
Others like Maha Abed expressed exhaustion after spending months in shelters. “I don’t want another night in this tent,” she said.

Future Steps
The 42-day truce, facilitated by Qatar, the United States and Egypt aims to bring temporary relief to a conflict that has lasted over 15 months. The deal allows for displaced residents to return to their homes while facilitating aid deliveries into Gaza.
However Israeli officials have emphasised that the ceasefire is temporary and military actions could resume if deemed necessary.
As the ceasefire takes effect hopes for lasting peace remain uncertain. Both sides face immense pressure to uphold the agreement and address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
