Midnight Earthquake Shakes Myanmar, Tremors Felt in Parts of India and Bangladesh.

top-news

A moderate earthquake struck Myanmar shortly after midnight causing tremors across northeast India and Bangladesh including Dhaka and Sylhet. The epicenter was located in Myanmar's Sagaing region with a magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter scale.

Context

In the early hours of Friday residents of Myanmar were startled by a strong tremor. The National Center for Seismology reported that the earthquake originated 106 km east of Manipur's Wangjing area in Sagaing, Myanmar. The quake had a depth of over 126 km and lasted for a brief period.

The impact was felt in northeast India, particularly in Mizoram and Assam’s border areas. Mizoram's Farkawn district experienced a 4.3 magnitude quake, followed by a 3.3 magnitude aftershock 39 minutes later. In Churachandpur near the Myanmar border the tremors were most intense. Fortunately no reports of casualties or property damage have emerged.

Bangladesh also felt the effects with Dhaka and Sylhet experiencing noticeable tremors. Experts highlighted that Sylhet situated near a tectonic plate boundary was among the most affected areas. Residents took to social media to share their experiences and authorities have issued aftershock warnings.

Additional Information

This is not the first time northeastern states have experienced seismic activity this month. Districts like Churachandpur, Tamenglong and Kamjong have recorded multiple tremors, ranging from 3.1 to 3.8 in magnitude. In Meghalaya a 4.1 magnitude quake was recorded on January 21 in the southwestern Khasi Hills.

Impact Analysis

The frequent seismic activity in the region underscores its proximity to tectonic plate boundaries. Experts caution that such areas remain vulnerable to aftershocks and larger quakes. Residents in high-risk zones are advised to remain alert and follow safety protocols.

While the midnight earthquake caused no significant damage it serves as a reminder of the seismic risks in the region. Authorities urge residents to stay vigilant and prepared for any future tremors.
