Bangladesh’s interim government led by Mohammad Yunus is set to initiate direct government run flights with Pakistan further strengthening bilateral ties. This comes amidst heightened political tension, allegations of corruption and strained relations with India.
Context
The announcement was made by Bangladesh's High Commissioner to Pakistan Mohammad Iqbal Hossain on Saturday. After resuming cargo shipping from Pakistan to Bangladesh in November marking a first since independence this move signals growing cooperation between the two nations.
In August Mohammad Yunus assumed the role of Chief Advisor to the interim government and since then multiple steps have been taken to fortify relations with Pakistan. Notably in November a Pakistani cargo vessel docked at Chattogram Port sparking controversy. The Awami League alleged via social media platform X that explosives may have been imported through these shipments.
Adding to the unease ISI officials including Major General Shahid Amir visited Bangladesh last week followed by meetings between Bangladeshi and Pakistani military officials. Bangladesh is also set to join Pakistan in a joint naval exercise and missile testing in the Maheshkhali-Hatiya region later this week.
Background
The political climate in Bangladesh is volatile. The interim government faces criticism for detaining opposition figures without trial including a prominent monk. At the same time investigations have begun into corruption allegations against Saima Wazed Putul the daughter of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who currently holds a WHO leadership role.
Reports suggest efforts are underway to remove Saima from her position at WHO. These developments are seen as attempts to undermine Sheikh Hasina's influence and increase pressure on her political faction.

Impact Analysis
While the strengthening of Bangladesh Pakistan ties signals a shift in regional dynamics it raises concerns for India. The move is perceived as a strategy to counter India's influence, creating potential diplomatic tensions in South Asia.
As Bangladesh and Pakistan deepen their cooperation the region braces for potential political and economic ripple effects. Observers are watching closely as these developments unfold reshaping the balance of power in South Asia.
