Greece is facing an alarming seismic crisis with over 500 earthquakes recorded in a short span. The tremors centered around Santorini and the Aegean Sea have triggered emergency alerts and mass evacuations. Scientists fear a powerful quake may strike soon, raising concerns of a historic disaster.

Continuous Tremors Spark Panic

Since Sunday Greece has been experiencing frequent earthquakes with over 200 noticeable tremors shaking different parts of the country. The epicenter appears to be between Santorini and Amorgos in the southern Aegean Sea leading to widespread fear among residents and tourists alike.

Santorini at High Risk

Authorities have issued urgent evacuation orders for parts of Santorini, a world-famous tourist destination. Scientists are closely monitoring Kolumbo an underwater volcano near the island to determine if volcanic activity is linked to the earthquakes. Some experts believe tectonic shifts beneath the sea are responsible but no conclusive evidence has been found yet.

On Tuesday morning, a 4.9 magnitude quake was recorded, adding to fears of an even stronger disaster in the coming days.

Santorini with a local population of just 15,000 attracts millions of tourists annually. In 2023 alone over 3 million visitors came to the island. Given its economic significance authorities are handling the crisis cautiously, balancing safety with tourism concerns.
