The Israeli military has officially charged five reservist soldiers for assaulting a Palestinian detainee last year. The soldiers who were stationed at the Sde Teiman detention center are accused of severe mistreatment including physical violence that caused serious injuries.

Details & Context

On Wednesday Israeli authorities confirmed that an indictment had been filed against five reservist soldiers. They face charges of causing serious harm and abuse under aggravating circumstances.

According to the military’s statement, the incident occurred on July 5th 2024 when soldiers were ordered to conduct a security search on a detainee. The Palestinian prisoner was allegedly blindfolded, handcuffed and restrained at the ankles before being subjected to extreme physical violence.

The charges claim that the detainee suffered multiple injuries, including

- Cracked ribs

- A punctured lung

- Severe internal wounds

The report states that the detainee was also stabbed with a sharp object causing deep injuries near the rectal area.

Background

The Sde Teiman facility located near the Israeli-Gaza border was set up to hold Palestinian detainees following the start of the Israel-Hamas conflict in October 7th 2023. Many individuals arrested during the ongoing war have been kept there under military supervision.

This is not the first case of reported abuse at the facility. Earlier this month an Israeli military court sentenced another soldier to seven months in prison after he admitted to severely mistreating Palestinian detainees at the same center.

Impact & Reactions

The latest charges raise further concerns about human rights violations in detention centers during the Israel-Gaza conflict. While Israeli authorities state that they are investigating and taking action against misconduct, human rights organisations continue to call for greater transparency and accountability.

With legal action now underway these five soldiers will face trial for their alleged involvement in the abuse case. Meanwhile international human rights groups remain focused on monitoring detainee treatment and ensuring justice for victims.
