Russia and the US recently met in Riyadh to discuss ways to end the Ukraine war. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has now stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump could meet before the end of February. However preparations for the face-to-face meeting may take time.

- The Riyadh meeting was the first direct discussion between US and Russian officials about stopping the war in Ukraine.
- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio led the talks.
- No Ukrainian or European officials were present.
- Putin expressed gratitude to Saudi Arabia’s King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for organizing the discussions.
Kremlin’s Perspective
According to Peskov the Riyadh meeting was a “very important step” toward resolving the conflict. He stated that the discussions had laid the groundwork for diplomatic efforts to progress. However he also emphasised that reaching a final agreement would take time.
He explained
- “Diplomats will now begin working based on the agreement reached between Lavrov and Rubio. But this is just the first step. It’s impossible to solve everything in one day or even a week. There is a long journey ahead.”

Ukraine’s Position
Kyiv has made it clear that it will not accept any peace agreement imposed without its consent. Ukrainian officials were not invited to the Riyadh talks raising concerns about the legitimacy of any potential deal.
