A tragic explosion in northwest Syria claimed the lives of seven civilians including a woman and a child. The blast caused by unexploded munitions stored inside a house occurred in Idlib province.

Details & Context

The explosion took place in Nayrab a town in Idlib province which has been affected by years of conflict. Civil defence teams rushed to the site to clear the debris and recover victims. The blast highlights the ongoing dangers posed by leftover explosives from the war.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, thousands of unexploded munitions remain scattered across the country. Many war torn areas still face threats from hidden explosives putting civilians at constant risk.

Official Statements & Reactions

Mohammed Ibrahim a member of the civil defence in Idlib confirmed that they received reports of a powerful blast. “Our teams arrived to find unexploded ordnance inside the house” he said.

A recent report by the NGO Humanity & Inclusion revealed that millions of Syrians live under the threat of landmines and other explosives. Experts estimate that 100,000 to 300,000 munitions have failed to detonate since the conflict began.

Danila Zizi the program director of Humanity & Inclusion in Syria called the situation “an absolute disaster” warning that over 15 million people are at risk.

Background & Ongoing Crisis

Syria’s war which started in 2011 has led to the deaths of over half a million people and displaced millions. While some displaced families are returning home the presence of leftover war explosives makes rebuilding efforts extremely dangerous.

The latest explosion is a reminder that urgent action is needed to clear these hazardous areas. Without proper demining efforts civilians - especially children - remain vulnerable to deadly accidents.

The tragedy in Idlib is a stark reminder of the long-term effects of war. Humanitarian groups continue to urge international support to remove unexploded ordnance and prevent further loss of innocent lives.
