The recent Israeli military operation in the northern West Bank specifically in Jenin and Tulkarm has raised alarms about potential mass displacement. The month-long campaign one of the largest since the Second Intifada has already forced over 40,000 Palestinians to flee their homes drawing comparisons to similar tactics used in Gaza.

Background and Significance

Israeli forces supported by drones, helicopters and battle tanks, have been systematically demolishing large areas of the Jenin refugee camp. Bulldozers have carved wide roads through the once densely packed alleys, signalling preparations for a prolonged military presence. According to local authorities engineering teams have installed water tanks and generators further suggesting plans for a long-term stay.

The operation commenced just a day after a ceasefire agreement was reached in Gaza, intensifying fears among Palestinians that Jenin is following the same pattern as the Jabaliya refugee camp in northern Gaza.

Statements and Interviews

Basheer Matahen a spokesperson for the Jenin municipality, likened the current situation to what transpired in Gaza, stating, “Jenin is a repeat of what happened in Jabalia. The camp has become uninhabitable.”

Hassan Al-Katib an 85-year-old resident who fled the Jenin camp with his family, accused Israel of attempting to erase the memory and identity of Palestinian refugees. “They want to erase the camps and the name of refugees from people’s memory,” he said.

Meanwhile, the UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency) expressed concern over the ongoing displacements. Spokesperson Juliette Touma emphasised that refugees retain protected status regardless of their location.

Global Reactions and Context

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas spokesperson, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, condemned the operation, urging the U.S. administration to intervene and stop Israel’s aggression against West Bank cities.

On the other hand, Israeli officials have denied allegations of forced displacement, asserting that the military actions aim solely at combating militant groups like Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar clarified that the operation targets “terrorists and no other objectives.”

Impact Analysis

Experts fear the long-term impact of these actions could lead to permanent displacement and heightened tensions. Michael Milshtein a former military intelligence official, noted the scale of evacuations, stating, “We haven’t seen such a step in the past.”

Additionally, concerns grow over the operation’s effect on peace efforts with hardliners pushing for the annexation of the West Bank, complicating relations with Arab states and the U.S.

The unfolding situation in Jenin and Tulkarm mirrors past events in Gaza deepening fears of a broader agenda aimed at permanent displacement. As the conflict intensifies, calls for international intervention grow louder emphasising the urgent need for a peaceful resolution.
