In a stunning discovery, China’s Zhurong Rover has revealed evidence of an ancient ocean and a hidden sea beach beneath Mars surface. The ground breaking findings suggest that Mars once had vast oceans and sandy coastlines challenging previous assumptions about the Red Planet's history.
The Discovery
In 2021, the Zhurong Rover landed on Mars northern plains as part of China’s Tianwen-1 mission. The rover explored the Utopia Planitia region for a year using high-frequency radar to penetrate the Martian surface. Recent data published in the “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences” confirms the existence of a buried coastline nearly 260 feet below the surface.
Scientific Breakthrough
Scientists found rock layers beneath Mars surface similar to those found along Earth’s coastlines. This discovery supports the theory that Mars had liquid water oceans billions of years ago. According to planetary scientist Benjamin Cardenas, the team identified features like wave patterns and wind-blown sand - strong evidence of a long-lost beach.
Ancient Oceans of Mars
Researchers believe the ancient Martian ocean, known as “Deuteronilus” existed about 4 billion years ago. This massive body of water is thought to have vanished around a billion years later due to climate change. As Mars atmosphere thinned, most of its water either escaped into space or became trapped underground.
Zhurong Rover's Contribution
Unlike previous Mars missions Zhurong Rover was equipped with advanced radar capable of scanning up to 260 feet beneath the surface. The rover’s mission ended unexpectedly in May 2022 when it went dormant during a Martian dust storm but not before gathering crucial data about the Red Planet's aquatic history.

Implications for Life on Mars
The confirmation of ancient water bodies on Mars reignites the debate about whether life once existed on the planet. Scientists suggest that Mars ancient oceans and rivers could have supported microbial life, making it essential to continue exploring its geological history.
The discovery by China’s Zhurong Rover marks a milestone in Martian research shedding new light on the planet's watery past. As future missions aim to explore these buried coastlines scientists hope to uncover more clues about Mars ancient climate and the possibility of past life.
