US President Donald Trump has announced a new plan to sell American citizenship through a ‘Gold Card’ scheme. Under this proposal, immigrants willing to pay 5 million dollar can secure permanent residency in the United States. This move is seen as Trump’s latest strategy to curb illegal immigration while welcoming wealthy foreigners.

Previously Trump declared trade wars with other nations and now he aims to tackle the country’s debt by selling citizenship. According to reports, his ‘Gold Card’ initiative allows immigrants to buy US citizenship for 5 million dollar - approximately 43.52 crore INR.

The End of the EB-5 Visa Program

Trump has also announced his intention to cancel the EB-5 Immigrant Investor Program which allowed foreigners to gain US citizenship by investing in American businesses and creating jobs. He criticised the program for undervaluing citizenship, calling it a ‘fraud’ due to its relatively low investment threshold. In place of the Green Card, he plans to introduce the Gold Card.

The Gold Card will offer the same benefits as a Green Card including permanent residency and the right to work in the US but at a premium price. Trump aims to sell 1 million Gold Cards raising funds to reduce national debt. He emphasised that wealthy individuals - including Russian oligarchs - are welcome to buy their way into America.
