Indonesia to Build New Hospital for Women and Children in Gaza

top-news

Indonesia is set to build a new women’s and children’s hospital in Gaza City to provide much-needed healthcare services. Funded by Indonesian NGOs and public donations, this project aims to help thousands of victims suffering due to the ongoing crisis. The 5,000 square meter hospital will be located in the Nasser neighbourhood and constructed with the support of Palestine’s Ministry of Health.

Details & Context

Hospital to Be Built with Indonesian Support

- The Indonesian Mother and Child Hospital (RSIA Indonesia) will be the second Indonesian-funded hospital in Gaza after the Indonesia Hospital in the north which has been operational since 2015.

- This 24.5 million dollar (402 billion rupiah) project is led by Aqsa Working Group and Maemuna Center Indonesia with backing from Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Location and Purpose

- The hospital will be built near Al-Rantisi Hospital on land donated by the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

- It aims to provide medical aid to women and children who make up a large portion of casualties in the ongoing conflict.

Urgent Need for Healthcare Facilities

- Since October 2023, the Indonesia Hospital in North Gaza has been one of the last functioning medical centers amid ongoing attacks.

- With over 48,000 deaths and 111,000 injuries, access to proper medical care is critical, especially for vulnerable groups.

Strong Indonesian Support for Palestine

- Indonesia has always been a staunch supporter of Palestine, considering it a constitutional duty to fight colonialism.

- A 200 million dollar fundraising campaign has been launched by Indonesia’s government and religious organisations to rebuild Gaza and support humanitarian efforts.

Onny Firyanti Hamidi, Head of Maemuna Center Indonesia

Additional Information

- A team will visit Gaza in the coming weeks to finalise the project plans.

- Construction is expected to begin by April and will be completed as soon as possible.

- The RSIA hospital will specialise in maternal and paediatric healthcare, offering emergency services, maternity wards and child care units.
