Massive Earthquakes in Myanmar Destroy Historic Bridge

Myanmar faced a terrifying night as four strong earthquakes struck one after another on March 28th, 2025. Homes shook, a historic bridge collapsed, and the tremors reached as far as Kolkata, Bangkok and beyond. Buildings crumbled, lives were lost and chaos spread across borders.

Details & Context

The ground in Myanmar trembled not once but four times late Friday night, starting at 11:50 PM. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported the first quake at 7.2 on the Richter scale, with its center 10 kilometers underground. Just 12 minutes later, at 12:02 AM a second quake of 7.0 hit. Then, at 12:57 AM, a third quake of 5.0 rattled the region, followed by a fourth at 1:07 AM, measuring 4.9, with its epicenter 30 kilometers deep.

The disaster didn’t stop at Myanmar’s borders. Tremors shook Kolkata and other districts in India, Meghalaya felt a 4.0 quake at 1:03 AM and Bangkok saw a massive under construction 30 story building collapse. In Myanmar’s Mandalay, a mosque caved in, killing at least 20 people. Thailand’s capital declared an emergency as 43 went missing and train services halted.

Quotes

The NCS warned,

“Four quakes in one night show how active the fault lines are under Myanmar.”

BNO News reported,

“In Bangkok, a 30-story building under construction turned to rubble, trapping workers inside.”

Thailand’s Prime Minister ordered,

“Take all steps to protect lives—Bangkok is now in a state of emergency.”

India’s PM Narendra Modi tweeted,

“I’m worried about the deadly quakes in Myanmar and Thailand. India stands ready to help.”

Additional Information

The historic Ava Bridge, a colonial-era marvel over the Irrawaddy River, couldn’t survive the shaking and collapsed, cutting off a key link in Myanmar. In Bangkok, over 400 workers were at the site of the fallen building—80 are still missing. Rescue teams are racing against time. Social media videos show swimming pools on high-rise buildings spilling water onto streets below, a chilling sign of the quakes’ power. Tremors also reached Bangladesh and China, alarming millions.

Impact Analysis

The quakes have left a trail of destruction. Myanmar’s Mandalay mourns its lost mosque and bridge, while Bangkok’s collapsed tower could mean hundreds trapped or dead. Travel is paralyzed—Bangkok’s airport shut for two hours and trains stopped. In India, Meghalaya’s quake caused panic but no major damage yet. Economically, rebuilding could cost billions and emotionally, the region is reeling. Experts say more aftershocks could follow, keeping people on edge.

Four quakes in one night have turned March 28th, 2025, into a nightmare for Myanmar, Thailand and beyond. From a fallen bridge to missing workers, the scars are deep. This disaster shows nature’s unstoppable force—and the urgent need for help and hope.
