According to WMO (World Meteorological Organization) gave an important news about La Nina on this Wednesday. WMO said there is a 55 percent chance that La Nina could form in the last three months, which means between December 2024 and February 2025. This is a bit lower than the 60% chance WMO predicted in September 2024. Even if La Nina develops, it will likely be weak and short time lived.
La Nina happen when sea surface normal temperatures in the Pacific Ocean become cooler then as usual . Latest update is La Nina now weakening, experts are worry about that the year 2025 might be less cold and could even break all heat records.
WMO Secretary General Celeste Saulo explained about, even if La Nina happen its cooling effect won't be strong enough to the counter because the warming by the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
What is La Nina?
La Nina is a weather pattern in the Pacific Ocean, where sea temperatures in the sea are cooler than usual. It’s the opposite of El Nino. During La Nina, winds start from the east become stronger, and the Eastern Pacific becomes drier, while some equatorial areas see rainfalls. In weak La Nina, this years temperatures can become extremely hot. The name "La Nina" means "Little Girl" in Spanish.
How will it affect India.?
India could face serious effects due to the weakening of La Nina. Since India is close to the equator area, a weaker La Nina means cooler weather will decries, the monsoon may weaken, and summers season could become hot then hotter than usual.
