Big Update on Kolkata's Iconic Yellow Taxis..! The Latest News Will Surprise You

Kolkata’s famous yellow taxis an integral part of the city’s culture and transport system were at risk of disappearing due to strict environmental regulations. However a major update has now ensured their presence on the roads in a new and improved form. The city is set to welcome eco-friendly CNG-powered yellow taxis, combining tradition with modern sustainability.

Details & Context

For decades Kolkata’s yellow taxis have been as iconic as the Victoria Memorial, Howrah Bridge and trams. However last December the state government imposed a ban on taxis older than 15 years to curb pollution. This move caused distress among taxi operators and citizens who feared the decline of this cultural symbol.

To address these concerns while maintaining environmental goals, the government has now introduced CNG-powered taxis. These vehicles will retain the classic yellow colour with blue borders, preserving the city’s heritage while ensuring a cleaner environment.

Official Announcements & Key Figures

According to the transport department around 150 new CNG taxis will soon hit the streets of Kolkata. This initiative was formalised through an MoU signed on the final day of the Bengal Global Business Summit between the state government and the taxi service operators.

Impact & Future Plans

The primary objective of this initiative is to prevent the disappearance of Kolkata’s signature yellow taxis while meeting modern transport demands. Passengers can expect better amenities and environmentally friendly travel options. These taxis will be available for booking through the state government’s ‘Yatri Sathi’ app.

Officials have confirmed that this is just the beginning with plans to expand the fleet of CNG taxis in the coming months, ensuring a seamless transition towards greener public transportation.

Kolkata’s beloved yellow taxis are here to stay but with a modern twist. The introduction of CNG-powered taxis marks a significant step towards sustainable urban transport while preserving the city’s cultural legacy.
