Kolkata’s East-West Metro service will be temporarily suspended for maintenance in February 2025. To help daily commuters Uber has introduced a shuttle service between Sealdah and New Town ensuring smooth and convenient travel. 

Metro Service Suspension & Maintenance

The East-West Metro line running from Howrah Maidan to Sector V will undergo a significant signalling upgrade in collaboration with an international company. Due to this, metro services will be completely halted from February 13th – 16th and again from February 20th – 23rd. The Kolkata Metro authorities have confirmed this via an official announcement.

With the metro closure impacting thousands of passengers alternative transport options are in high demand. In response Uber has stepped in with a dedicated shuttle service.

Uber Shuttle Service Details

- Route: Sealdah to New Town

- Start Date: February 20th 2025

- End Date: March 13th 2025

- Timings

  - Morning: 7:30 AM - 11:00 AM

  - Evening: 4:00 PM - 7:30 PM

- Frequency: Every 15 minutes

- Booking: Available on the Uber app with advance seat reservations.

This service will provide relief to passengers affected by the metro suspension between Sealdah - Salt Lake-Sector V - New Town.

Government & Uber’s Collaboration

Kolkata became the first Indian city to introduce Uber Shuttle services under an agreement signed between Uber and the West Bengal Transport Department in November 2023. The overwhelming response has encouraged authorities to expand routes during metro suspensions.

Speaking on the launch Transport Minister Snehasis Chakraborty stated,

“Ensuring seamless public transport is our priority. The new Uber Shuttle route will provide a safe, efficient and comfortable alternative for daily commuters.”

How to Book an Uber Shuttle Ride

1. Open the Uber App

2. Select ‘Shuttle’ from available options

3. Enter your Pickup & Drop-off locations

4. Choose your route & departure time

5. Confirm your shuttle ride booking

6. Receive a notification with driver & vehicle details

7. Arrive at the pickup point 5 minutes before departure

8. Show your QR code to board the shuttle

Each Uber Shuttle bus will accommodate 24 to 43 passengers and will be operated by local fleet partners using Uber’s technology.

With this new initiative, Kolkata’s daily commuters can expect hassle-free, timely and comfortable travel despite metro disruptions.
