·      Katwa youth arrested in Mumbai for ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ Facebook post sparks outrage.! Mumbai Police act amid India-Pakistan tensions in 2025.

Jai Hind. Jai Bharat. I Love My India. Sare Jahan Se Accha Hindustan Hamara.

A young man from Katwa, West Bengal has been arrested in Mumbai for posting “Pakistan Zindabad” on Facebook, stirring anger among locals in his hometown. Identified as Sarif Sheikh, the youth was nabbed by Mumbai Police on May 9th, 2025 after a complaint from his neighbours in Danihat, Katwa. With India-Pakistan tensions already high, this incident has sparked protests and debates, raising questions about social media responsibility in 2025.

Details & Context

Sarif Sheikh, a resident of Danihat Paikpara in Katwa, West Bengal was working in Mumbai when he posted provocative content on Facebook. His post included the slogan “Pakistan Zindabad” and a statement, “Islam will triumph, Inshallah” alongside videos of Pakistani military vehicles. The post quickly spread, causing an uproar in Danihat. On the night of May 8th, 2025 furious locals gathered outside the Danihat police outpost, demanding Sheikh’s arrest. Some even visited his family home to express their outrage.

Acting on the complaint, Katwa Police coordinated with Mumbai Police, who arrested Sheikh on May 9th, 2025. The Katwa Police have filed a case under sections 147, 152 and 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) which deal with rioting endangering national unity and provocation of religious sentiments. A Katwa Police team has since travelled to Mumbai to bring Sheikh back on transit remand for further questioning.

The arrest comes at a sensitive time with India-Pakistan tensions escalating in 2025. Similar incidents have been reported recently including a 19-year-old Pune student arrested on May 9th for a “Pakistan Zindabad” Instagram post and a mob lynching in Mangaluru over pro-Pakistan slogans during a cricket match, as reported by The Times of India on May 5th, 2025. These events highlight growing public sensitivity toward such statements amid national security concerns.

Quotes

A Katwa Police official stated, “We received a complaint about Sarif Sheikh’s post which was highly provocative. After coordinating with Mumbai Police, he was arrested and we’re bringing him back for further investigation.”

A Danihat resident shared their frustration on X (@LocalVoiceWB, May 9, 2025): “How can someone from our town support Pakistan like this.? It’s shameful and unacceptable.! #KatwaYouthArrested”

Additional Information

Sheikh’s post wasn’t an isolated incident. On May 7th, 2025, Meerut Police arrested a youth for a similar pro-Pakistan Instagram post, as reported by @NavbharatTimes. In Pune, a 19-year-old engineering student Khadija Sheikh faced arrest and expulsion from her college for a “Pakistan Zindabad” post on Instagram, according to The Indian Express on May 9th, 2025. These incidents reflect a pattern of legal action against individuals posting pro-Pakistan content on social media, especially during heightened India-Pakistan tensions.

On X, sentiment around the Katwa incident is heated, with hashtags like #KatwaYouthArrested and #PakistanZindabadPost trending on May 9th – 10th, 2025. Over 5,000 posts mentioned the arrest, with users debating freedom of speech versus national loyalty. Some called for stricter social media regulations, while others questioned if the punishment was too harsh. A post by @Zee24Ghanta on May 10th, 2025 about the arrest gained significant traction, amplifying public awareness.

Impact Analysis

The arrest of Sarif Sheikh has far-reaching implications. In Katwa the incident has disrupted communal harmony, with locals feeling betrayed by one of their own. Protests outside the Danihat police outpost on May 8th reflect the community’s anger and there’s a risk of further unrest if not handled carefully. Nationally, this case adds fuel to the already tense India-Pakistan situation with media outlets highlighting the need for stricter social media monitoring.

Socially, the incident has sparked debates on X about patriotism and freedom of expression. Some users argue that Sheikh’s post while offensive, shouldn’t lead to such severe consequences, while others demand harsher penalties for anti-national statements. Economically, Sheikh’s family likely dependent on his earnings from Mumbai may face financial strain due to his arrest and potential legal battles.

This case also underscores the growing trend of legal action against pro-Pakistan sentiments on social media. In 2024, three people were arrested in Karnataka for raising “Pakistan Zindabad” slogans at Vidhana Soudha, as per @NDTV (March 4th, 2024). The recurring nature of such incidents suggests a need for public awareness about the consequences of inflammatory online content, especially during sensitive geopolitical times.

Conclusion

The arrest of Sarif Sheikh in Mumbai for his “Pakistan Zindabad” Facebook post has sent shockwaves through Katwa and beyond. As India grapples with rising tensions with Pakistan in 2025 this incident highlights the delicate balance between free speech and national loyalty. While the law takes its course, the event serves as a reminder of the power—and responsibility—that comes with social media. Communities must stay vigilant and individuals should think twice before posting content that could incite unrest.
