Indian Railways serving millions daily has specific ticketing rules for children. While some kids travel for free others require half or full tickets based on their age and seat preferences. Here’s a simple guide to help parents navigate these rules and avoid any surprises during their journey.


Who Can Travel for Free.?

According to the Indian Railways children aged “1 to 4 years” can travel without a ticket. However they won’t be allotted a separate seat or berth, so they will need to share with a guardian.


Who Qualifies for Half Tickets.?

For children aged “5 to 12 years” they can travel with a “half ticket”.

A half ticket allows the child to travel at a reduced fare but doesn’t include a separate seat or berth.

If a seat or berth is needed, you will have to pay the full ticket price for the child.


Full Ticket Requirements

Children aged “12 years and above” they require a full ticket for both fare and seating/berth allotment.


What Happens If You Travel in Train Without a Ticket.?

Indian Railways imposes strict penalties for ticketless travel

“Fine Rs. 250” is charged from you.

Additionally passengers must have to pay the fare from the boarding station to the point of detection.

To avoid penalties, to ensure every traveller including children has a valid ticket as per the rules.
