“I Will Say Hindustan Zindabad”: Kashmiri Youth Harassed & Assaulted in Haryana – Viral Video Sparks Outrage

top-news

§  Dignity Under Duress

§  Kashmiri shawl seller assaulted in Haryana, forced to chant slogans

§  Despite threats, he stood firm: ‘I am a proud Indian.’ Full report

Mumbai: In a shocking incident that has ignited a firestorm on social media, a young Kashmiri shawl seller in Haryana was surrounded by a mob, verbally abused and forced to prove his patriotism. The viral video, emerging from the Kaithal district, captures a moment of stark contrast: a group of aggressive men hurling abuses versus a lone youth maintaining his dignity.

While the mob demanded he chant specific slogans like “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” to prove his loyalty, the youth calmly replied that he is a proud Indian and would gladly say “Hindustan Zindabad” (Long Live India) of his own free will but refused to be coerced by intimidation. This incident is not isolated—it is the latest in a worrying series of attacks targeting Kashmiri traders across northern India.

Details & Context: The Kaithal Incident

The video, which surfaced late this week, shows the attackers cornering the vendor.

·       The Coercion: The men can be heard aggressively forcing the youth to chant slogans. When he politely asserts his identity as an Indian citizen who respects his country, the abuse intensifies.

·       Hate Speech: The aggressors used derogatory language targeting the Muslim community, drawing bizarre and threatening parallels between the situation of Hindus in Bangladesh and Muslims in India. They threatened to expel him from the country if he did not comply.

·       The Resistance: despite the overwhelming pressure and threat of physical violence, the Kashmiri youth stood his ground. He stated clearly that Kashmir is an integral part of India and that his patriotism does not need to be performed on command for a mob.

Parallel Assault in Uttarakhand

Just days prior to the Haryana incident, a more violent attack was reported in Uttarakhand’s Udham Singh Nagar district.

·       The Victim: Bilal Ahmed Gani (28), a shawl seller from Kupwara, Kashmir.

·       The Attack: Bilal was allegedly intercepted by a group led by a local named Ankur Singh (reportedly associated with Bajrang Dal) in Kashipur. He was brutally beaten, his motorcycle was seized and there was an attempt to abduct him.

·       The Escape: Bilal only escaped when bystanders intervened, forcing the attackers to flee.

Quotes: Voices from the Ground

The resilience of the victims and the political fallout highlight the severity of the situation.

The Kashmiri Youth (Haryana Video)

“I am an Indian. Kashmir is part of India. I will say ‘Hindustan Zindabad’ with pride but do not force me.”

Bilal Ahmed Gani (Uttarakhand Victim)

“I have been coming here for eight years to sell shawls. I have never faced such hate before. My family is terrified and wants me to return home immediately but I cannot leave yet—too many people owe me money for my goods.”

Mehbooba Mufti (Former CM, J&K)

“Bilal Ahmed, a shawl seller was brutally assaulted by right-wing goons. Despite approaching the police, no FIR was initially registered. I urge the DGP of Uttarakhand to intervene personally.”

Additional Information: A Dangerous Pattern

These are not random skirmishes; they represent a growing trend of targeting migrant laborers and traders from Kashmir in states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Haryana.

·       Economic Vulnerability: Most victims are seasonal migrants who travel south during the harsh Kashmiri winter to earn a livelihood. They operate on credit and small margins.

·       Targeted Intimidation: Reports suggest these attacks are often premeditated by local fringe groups to create an atmosphere of fear, forcing Kashmiri traders to abandon their businesses.

·       Police Inaction: In the Uttarakhand case, allegations surfaced that local police initially refused to file a complaint until high-profile political pressure was applied by leaders like Mehbooba Mufti.

Impact Analysis: The Cost of Hate

1. National Integration
Incidents like these undermine the very idea of national unity. When citizens from Kashmir are treated as “outsiders” or “suspects” in their own country, it alienates the youth and fuels resentment, counteracting years of integration efforts.

2. Economic Fallout
If Kashmiri traders stop visiting these states due to safety concerns, it disrupts a decades-old economic cycle. Local customers lose access to goods and Kashmiri families lose their primary winter income.

3. Social Polarization
The viral nature of these videos serves to polarize communities further. While many netizens have condemned the bullying, the existence of such mobs indicates deep-seated radicalization at the grassroots level.

Conclusion: Justice Delayed.?

The courage of the young man in Haryana, who refused to let a mob dictate his patriotism, has won hearts online. However, praise is not protection.

While the Uttarakhand police have arrested the accused following political intervention, the question remains: Why must a video go viral or a former Chief Minister tweet before the police act.? Unless there is a zero-tolerance policy for mob vigilantism, the safety of Kashmiri traders—and the constitutional right to move freely across India—remains in peril.
