Jammu and Kashmir is all set to welcome its first ever Vande Bharat Express. The inauguration is expected to take place in the first or second week of February with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the event. Preparations are nearly complete and the much awaited train service promises to bring significant benefits to the region.

Details & Context

The Indian Railways has confirmed that while the exact date for the inauguration is yet to be finalized all arrangements are being made for a grand launch. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to flag off the train from Katra. Ahead of the launch trial runs are scheduled for January 24th and 25th covering the route between Katra and Srinagar.

During the trials the train was tested at speeds of up to 110 km/h ensuring its readiness for regular operations. The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) personally oversaw the final trial run. The train is now certified to run at a steady speed of 85 km/h on this route.

Significance

The launch of the Vande Bharat train in Jammu and Kashmir is anticipated to boost both tourism and trade in the region. Enhanced connectivity will provide easier access for travellers and promote local economic growth.

Prime Minister's Visit

On the day of the inauguration PM Modi is expected to land at Jammu Airport and take a helicopter ride over the iconic Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest railway bridge. Following this, he will visit the Katra railway station to officially flag off the train.

The Prime Minister will also address a public gathering at one of two proposed venues: a sports stadium in Katra or the Maulana Azad Stadium.
