What is a Cancer Vaccine.?
A cancer vaccine is a form of immunotherapy designed to boost the body's natural defence system to fight cancer cells. Unlike traditional vaccines that use weakened viruses, cancer vaccines target specific proteins or antigens found in cancer cells.
There are two main types of cancer vaccines
1. Preventive Vaccines: These stop cancer from developing in the first place.
2. Therapeutic Vaccines: These are used to treat existing cancer by reducing tumour size and preventing the disease from spreading.
Clinical trials have shown promising results in treating melanoma, prostate cancer and other forms of cancer. Researchers are also exploring the possibility of combining these vaccines with chemotherapy and radiation therapy for better effectiveness.
