Alarming Drug Quality Scandal....! Over 100 Popular Medicines Fail Central Drug Control Tests

top-news

In a shocking revelation, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has declared 93 drugs unfit for use after rigorous quality tests conducted in December. These failed medications include widely used medicines for common to severe ailments like paracetamol, antibiotics, blood pressure pills, thyroid medications and even critical pneumonia drugs.

Details & Context

The CDSCO conducted random sample tests across multiple states in January, revealing that 93 drugs failed the quality standards with an additional 51 drugs flagged for further scrutiny. Among the failed drugs 24 samples tested in Kolkata’s drug testing lab were found substandard.

Key findings include

- Heart and Nerve Medications: Popular drugs for controlling high blood pressure and heart conditions such as Telmisartan and Amoxicillin with Potassium Clavulanate, failed quality tests.

- Children's Medicines: Cold and cough syrups for children found to be subpar raised serious concerns.

- Skin and Fungal Infection Creams: Several skin treatment creams and antifungal medications were deemed ineffective.

- Liver and Digestive Medications: Drugs meant for liver diseases and ulcers also appeared on the failed list.

Quotes

A CDSCO spokesperson stated, “Ensuring public health safety is our top priority. Immediate action will be taken against pharmaceutical companies violating drug quality standards.”

Additional Information

The failed drugs originated from manufacturing units in various regions, including

- West Bengal: Factories in Chopra.

- Himachal Pradesh: Solan, Baddi, Kasuali, Kangra.

- Uttarakhand: Roorkee, Dehradun.

- Tamil Nadu: Chennai, Srinivasapuram.

- Gujarat: Surendranagar, Rajkot.

- Maharashtra: Palghar, Mumbai.

- Punjab: Mohali, Amritsar.

- Other regions: Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh (Kurnool), Jammu, Madhya Pradesh (Indore), Sikkim (Namchi), and Kerala (Thiruvananthapuram).

Shocking revelations also include traces of bacteria found in some drug samples while others failed sterility tests.

Impact Analysis

This scandal has shaken public trust in pharmaceutical companies raising urgent questions about drug manufacturing practices. Patients relying on critical medications for heart disease, infections and chronic illnesses now face added stress and fear.

The CDSCO's crackdown on substandard drugs serves as a wake-up call for the healthcare industry. Immediate corrective measures are vital to restore faith in the medical system and protect public health.
