West Bengal is bracing for a sizzling Boishakh as temperatures are set to climb sharply this week. While scattered showers with thunderstorms may offer brief relief in some areas, a heatwave is likely to grip western districts by the weekend. Kolkata will see partly cloudy skies but little rain, with discomfort rising due to high humidity.

Details & Context

·      Weather Patterns: Starting Sunday, storm risks will decrease across South Bengal. Scattered light to moderate rain with thunderstorms is expected in select districts like North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Medinipur and Jhargram until Monday. By Tuesday, clear skies will dominate, pushing temperatures up by 2-4°C by Wednesday.

·      North Bengal Forecast: All North Bengal districts, from Darjeeling to Malda will see light to moderate rain with thunderstorms on Sunday and Monday. Gusty winds (30-40 km/h) may hit Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar. Temperatures will rise by up to 4°C by Wednesday.

·      Kolkata’s Outlook: Kolkata will experience partly cloudy skies with high humidity, leading to morning fog or haze. Rainfall chances drop significantly from Monday, with temperatures potentially hitting 37-38°C by the weekend, creating near-heatwave conditions.

·      Regional Weather Systems: Cyclonic circulations over Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Assam and North Bangladesh, along with trough lines from Jharkhand to Assam and Punjab to Jharkhand are influencing the current weather. Another trough from central Maharashtra to the Gulf of Mannar adds to the mix.

Quotes

“The sharp rise in temperatures by midweek will make conditions uncomfortable, especially in western districts. Residents should stay hydrated and avoid direct sun exposure,” says a senior meteorologist from the Regional Meteorological Centre.

“Kolkata’s high humidity levels are making mornings feel foggy. We expect clearer skies and hotter days soon,” adds a local weather expert.

Additional Information

·      Temperature Trends: Kolkata’s night temperatures have risen from 25.2°C to 27.8°C, while daytime highs jumped from 31.2°C to 33.4°C. Humidity levels range between 59% and 91%.

·      Other States: Heavy rain and fresh snowfall are likely in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh. Assam, Meghalaya and Sikkim may see heavy to very heavy rainfall. Heatwaves are expected in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, while dust storms (20-30 km/h) could hit Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Impact Analysis

·      Daily Life: Rising temperatures and humidity will increase discomfort, especially in urban areas like Kolkata. Outdoor workers and commuters should take precautions.

·      Agriculture: The heatwave in western districts may stress crops, requiring farmers to monitor irrigation needs closely.

·      Health Risks: High heat and humidity could lead to dehydration and heat-related illnesses. Elderly and children are particularly vulnerable.

·      Power Demand: Soaring temperatures may spike electricity usage for cooling, potentially straining local grids.

West Bengal is transitioning from scattered rains to intense summer heat, with Kolkata and western districts facing the brunt of rising temperatures. While North Bengal may see some rainfall, the overall trend points to a scorching week ahead. Staying informed and prepared is key to navigating this weather shift.
