National Congress leader Rahul Gandhi fiercely criticised RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat for his controversial statement that India’s true independence came with the construction of the Ram Temple not in 1947. Rahul labelled the remarks as an insult to the freedom struggle and accused Bhagwat of undermining the Constitution.

Speaking at the inauguration of Congress's new headquarters in Delhi on this Wednesday Rahul Gandhi didn’t hold back. He said, "The RSS chief dares to declare that India didn't gain independence in 1947 but only after the Ram Temple's construction. Such arrogance is a direct insult to the sacrifices made during the freedom struggle and our Constitution. If this were any other country he would’ve been arrested for such statements."
Rahul further emphasised that Bhagwat’s words demeaned the sacrifices of countless freedom fighters. "By claiming our Constitution is not a symbol of independence he insults every Indian. This nonsense must stop," he added.
The event also saw Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Sonia Gandhi in attendance, along with other senior leaders like Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
Background
Mohan Bhagwat’s controversial statement was made during an event in Indore earlier this week. He declared that India attained "real independence" with the construction of the Ram Temple and suggested that the day should be celebrated as "Pratishtha Dwadashi." This sparked outrage across opposition parties who accused Bhagwat of disrespecting India’s freedom fighters.
Mallikarjun Kharge dismissed the remarks, stating, "Those who had no role in the freedom struggle have no right to comment on it." Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut also criticised Bhagwat reminding him that the Ram Temple movement predates RSS and should not be politicised.

Impact Analysis
The statement has rekindled debates over the interpretation of independence and the role of historical figures. Critics argue that such remarks could polarise the nation and divert focus from pressing issues. The backlash also highlights a broader dissatisfaction among opposition parties with RSS’s ideological influence on national discourse.
