TMC MP Shatrughan Sinha’s statement about banning non-vegetarian food has sparked controversy. His own party members and opposition leaders have criticised him for the remark.

Context

The debate over food choices is not new in Indian politics. Earlier, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had strongly opposed BJP’s interference in people’s food habits. But this time, her own party MP Shatrughan Sinha has made a controversial statement supporting a ban on non-veg food.

Reacting to this, senior TMC leader Saugata Roy stated, “We completely disagree with this. People have the right to choose what they eat.”

TMC MLA Humayun Kabir went a step further and said, “Bengalis are known for their love of fish and rice. If anyone tries to stop them from eating fish, they will chase them with brooms! I am one of them.”

What Did Shatrughan Sinha Say.?

The controversy started when Asansol MP Shatrughan Sinha compared meat bans in different regions of India. He said, “Beef is banned in some places but not everywhere. Why this difference.? If banning is necessary then it should be done uniformly across the country.”

This remark has drawn criticism from various political circles. Many reminded that Mamata Banerjee had earlier slammed BJP for imposing food restrictions. She had said, “Why should anyone dictate what people eat.? If BJP bans eggs, meat and fish, what will people eat.?”

Shatrughan Sinha’s statement has put TMC in an awkward position. While BJP and Congress are attacking him, his own party leaders are also distancing themselves from his views. The debate over food choices continues to be a sensitive issue in Indian politics.
