West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee strongly criticised the management of Mahakumbh alleging that the event lacked proper planning and resulted in immense suffering for the poor. She claimed that while the wealthy enjoyed luxury camps worth lakhs common devotees faced severe hardships including overpriced food and inadequate facilities.
Mamata Banerjee’s Sharp Criticism
Speaking in the Assembly Mamata Banerjee expressed her concern over the alleged suppression of casualty figures at Mahakumbh. She questioned the transparency of the event’s management, stating,
“We respect Mahakumbh but was there any planning.? So many people died - how many numbers have been hidden.?”
She further alleged that
- Luxury tents and VIP facilities were provided for the rich while the poor struggled with basic necessities.
- A single cup of tea was priced between Rs 500 and Rs 2,000.
- Even access to bathing areas required extra charges making it unaffordable for many pilgrims.
Allegations of Neglect and Exploitation
Mamata also claimed that several deaths occurred due to overcrowding yet no proper death certificates were issued to the victims’ families. She accused the authorities of failing to implement a robust crowd management strategy leading to potential stampedes.
“Such a grand event was organised but what was the plan.? Wasn’t there any strategy to ensure safety.?” she questioned.

Concerns Over Environmental Impact
Apart from mismanagement Mamata also pointed out the environmental damage caused by the event stating that the sacred space was being polluted due to improper waste disposal and unregulated commercial activities.
Impact & Reactions
Her remarks sparked widespread debate with supporters praising her for highlighting critical issues while opponents accused her of politicising a religious event. The concerns she raised have reignited discussions about event planning, crowd control and financial transparency in large-scale religious gatherings.
Mamata Banerjee’s statements have drawn attention to the growing concerns over the commercialisation of religious events. While Mahakumbh remains a revered spiritual gathering the need for better planning and equal treatment for all devotees has become a major talking point.
