Avoid the QR Code Scam...! How to Identify Fake QR Codes.

QR codes have become a common method for quick and easy payments from buying groceries to paying for fuel. However the scammers are now replacing genuine QR codes with fake ones diverting payments to their accounts. A recent incident happened in Madhya Pradesh revealed how fraudsters targeted multiple shops, including a petrol pump by swapping their QR codes. Here's how to stay safe and identify fake QR codes.

Why Fake QR Codes Are Dangerous

Fake QR codes look identical to real ones making them hard to distinguish. Scanning a fake code can redirect your payment to a scammer's account without your knowledge. Protecting yourself requires extra caution and some smart practices.

Tips to Avoid Fake QR Code Scams

1. Use a Soundbox for Verification

   - Merchants should use sound boxes that announce successful payments. If a fake QR code is used this will help identify discrepancies in real time.

2. Verify Before You Pay

   - When scanning a QR code check the recipient’s name or shop name that appears on your UPI app. If the name doesn’t match the merchant or business avoid proceeding with the payment.

3. Double Check Using Google Lens

   - If you suspect a QR code might be fake scan it with Google Lens. This tool will show the URL or account it links to helping you confirm its authenticity.

4. Don’t Use QR Codes for Receiving Money

   - QR codes are meant for making payments not receiving them. Scanning a code to receive money is unnecessary and could lead to fraud.
