Central Health Ministry's New Guidelines on Headphone Use — How Long is Safe.?

The Central Health Ministry has released crucial guidelines advising people not to use headphones for more than 2 hours a day. This directive has been sent to the Chief Secretaries of all states and heads of various medical institutions.

Details & Context

According to the Ministry excessive headphone use can severely impact hearing abilities especially among the younger generation. Prolonged exposure to loud sound can gradually weaken hearing capacity. The guidelines clearly mention that the volume should not exceed 50 decibels when using headphones. For children the Ministry further recommends reducing screen time along with limited headphone use.

The Ministry also highlighted the potential risk of Tinnitus - a condition where a person hears ringing, buzzing or humming sounds in one or both ears without any external source. Tinnitus doesn’t have an age limit but studies show that children using headphones for gaming or entertainment are at a higher risk.

To minimise these risks the Ministry advises using noise-cancelling headphones and keeping the sound level as low as possible.

The guidelines didn’t just stop at headphone usage, they also emphasised reducing social media consumption as part of an overall strategy for better mental and physical health.

Impact Analysis

Prolonged headphone use can damage tiny hair cells inside the inner ear that move in response to sound waves. When these cells are damaged or broken, irregular electrical signals are sent to the brain, causing the perception of phantom sounds - a key symptom of Tinnitus.

Common symptoms include

- Ringing or buzzing sounds in one or both ears.

- Continuous or intermittent noise without any external source.

- Sensations like insects chirping, drum beats, or a humming sound from within the head.

The Central Health Ministry's latest guidelines highlight a growing concern about the impact of modern technology on health. With rising headphone usage among youth these steps aim to protect hearing abilities and encourage healthier habits.

It’s time to listen to the experts — lower the volume, limit usage and safeguard your hearing.
