Get ready, Bengal.! The weather is taking a dramatic turn as heavy rainfall is set to drench South and North Bengal starting Monday, July 28th, 2025. With Kolkata’s skies turning cloudy and humidity hitting 100%, brace for intense showers that could lead to flooding in multiple districts. Stay informed with this detailed weather update to navigate the stormy days ahead.!

Details & Context
After a brief 1.5-day respite, South Bengal including Kolkata is gearing up for a fresh wave of heavy to very heavy rainfall starting Monday, July 28th and continuing until Thursday, July 31st. According to the India Meteorological Department (@IMD), a low-pressure system over Madhya Pradesh and surrounding areas is intensifying monsoon activity, bringing high moisture levels and persistent rain. North Bengal will also face significant rainfall, particularly from Thursday, July 31st, through Saturday, August 2nd.

·       In South Bengal, districts like Purba and Paschim Bardhaman, Birbhum, Murshidabad and Nadia are on high alert for heavy rain on Monday. Tuesday, July 29th will see intensified showers in Nadia, North and South 24 Parganas, Hooghly, Purba Bardhaman and Bankura. By Wednesday, Birbhum and Murshidabad will continue to face heavy downpours, with rainfall expected to ease after Thursday afternoon. The @IMD predicts no significant heavy rain in South Bengal for at least 72 hours post-Thursday.

·       North Bengal’s weather takes a different rhythm. On Monday, heavy rain is expected only in Kalimpong, Malda and South Dinajpur. Tuesday and Wednesday will see scattered showers with lightning but heavy rainfall risks escalate from Thursday in Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri. By Friday, August 1st heavy rain alerts are issued for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri continuing into Saturday.

·       Kolkata, the heart of Bengal will face cloudy skies and 100% humidity from Monday with rainfall intensifying on Monday and Tuesday. Last week’s heavy showers already disrupted daily life, causing waterlogging in several areas. This fresh spell could worsen conditions, especially in low-lying urban pockets.

Quotes

·       “The monsoon is in full swing and we urge residents to stay cautious, especially in flood-prone districts. Avoid waterlogged areas and keep emergency contacts handy,” said an @IMD spokesperson on X, emphasizing the need for preparedness.

·       “Kolkata’s drainage system is under pressure. We’re working round-the-clock to clear blockages but residents must cooperate by avoiding unnecessary travel during heavy rain,” a Kolkata Municipal Corporation official shared in a recent post on X.

Additional Information
Beyond Bengal, other states are also bracing for intense monsoon activity. Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha face heavy rainfall risks in the next 24 hours, while Rajasthan and Gujarat are under alerts for severe showers in some areas. Sikkim and adjacent North Bengal districts are flagged for very heavy rain on Monday and Tuesday. Uttarakhand, East Madhya Pradesh and West Madhya Pradesh are also expected to see very heavy rainfall on July 28th and 29th with alerts extending to Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Odisha until July 31th.

Recent X posts highlight public concerns about recurring waterlogging in Kolkata and South Bengal’s urban areas. Users have shared images of flooded streets, urging civic bodies to act swiftly. Meanwhile, North Bengal residents are preparing for potential landslides in hilly areas like Darjeeling and Kalimpong with local authorities issuing advisories on X to avoid travel in vulnerable zones.

Impact Analysis
The heavy rainfall forecast poses significant challenges,

·       Flooding Risks: Low-lying areas in South Bengal, particularly in Kolkata, North and South 24 Parganas and Nadia face waterlogging and potential flooding. Last week’s rains already disrupted traffic and daily life and this spell could exacerbate issues.

·       North Bengal Concerns: Hilly districts like Darjeeling and Kalimpong are at risk of landslides while Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri may see river levels rise.

·       Daily Life Disruptions: Commuters in Kolkata and other urban centers should expect delays with public transport likely affected. Schools and offices may issue advisories based on rainfall intensity.

·       Agriculture and Economy: While monsoon rains benefit agriculture, excessive rainfall could damage crops in districts like Birbhum and Murshidabad, impacting farmers’ livelihoods.

Conclusion
Bengal is on the brink of a rainy showdown with South Bengal facing heavy showers from Monday to Thursday and North Bengal gearing up for intense rain from Thursday to Saturday. Kolkata’s high humidity and persistent rain will test the city’s infrastructure, while flood risks loom large in multiple districts. Stay updated with the latest weather alerts, plan your travel carefully and prepare for potential disruptions.
