§  Mirik Bears Worst Darjeeling Landslide Impact

Heavy rains and massive landslides have devastated North Bengal, claiming at least 24 lives and leaving dozens missing across Darjeeling, Mirik and surrounding areas. The disaster, described as the worst since 2015 has completely transformed the picturesque hill stations into zones of destruction with bridges collapsing, roads severed and entire communities cut off from the outside world.

Mirik Faces Worst Devastation as Death Toll Continues to Rise

The tourist town of Mirik has borne the heaviest casualties with 11 confirmed deaths reported from the area. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) confirmed that landslides struck multiple locations including

·       Sarsaly

·       Jasbirgaon

·       Mirik Basti

·       Dhar Gaon

·       the Mirik Lake area

Local residents described the horror as landslides struck between 2 AM and 3 AM on Sunday morning. “Most parts of the Mirik community block have suffered heavy damages. Eleven people, including three children, died in their sleep when landslides hit their homes,” said Kailash Khawas, president of the Mirik Panchayat Samiti.

The iconic Dudhia iron bridge, which connected Mirik to Siliguri, completely collapsed under the force of raging floodwaters, cutting off the vital transportation link. Shocking videos of the bridge collapse have gone viral on social media, showing the devastating power of the Balason River in full spate.

Unprecedented Rainfall Triggers Natural Catastrophe

The meteorological data reveals the scale of this natural disaster. Darjeeling recorded 261 mm of rainfall in just 24 hours, while some areas like Gajoldoba in Jalpaiguri witnessed an extraordinary 300 mm of rain. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee described the situation as receiving “over 300 mm of rainfall within 12 hours on Saturday night”.

The India Meteorological Department had issued red alerts for extremely heavy rainfall in sub-Himalayan West Bengal, warning of continued precipitation until October 7. Weather experts attribute the disaster to water overflow from Bhutan and Sikkim, combined with a low-pressure system that unexpectedly curved toward North Bengal.

Gorkhaland Territorial Administration Reports 35 Landslide Locations

Anit Thapa, chief executive of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), confirmed that landslides have been reported at 35 different locations across the Darjeeling region. The disaster has been compared to the devastating 2015 landslides that killed nearly 40 people, making this one of the worst natural calamities to hit the “Queen of the Hills” in a decade.

North Bengal Development Minister Udayan Guha described the situation as “alarming” and warned that the death toll “is likely to go up” as rescue operations continue. Emergency teams are still struggling to reach remote areas due to blocked roads and continued rainfall.

Tourist Hub Transformed into Disaster Zone

The timing couldn’t have been worse, as hundreds of tourists had flocked to the hills for post-Durga Puja celebrations. Families from Kolkata, Howrah and other parts of Bengal found themselves stranded in popular destinations like Mirik, Ghoom and Lepchajagat. Among the stranded tourists are Kolkata residents Jonti Roy Barman and Tapobrata Mondal from Jadavpur, who came to the hills on their bikes for Panchami celebrations and got trapped in Mirik.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has advised all tourists to “stay where they are until police evacuate them safely,” assuring that rescue costs would be borne by the state government. The GTA has shut down all major tourist attractions including Tiger Hill and Rock Garden as a precautionary measure.

Infrastructure Collapse Cuts Off Entire Regions

The disaster has resulted in massive infrastructure damage across the region. Two iron bridges have collapsed and several major roads connecting Bengal and Sikkim have been completely severed. National Highway 10, which connects Sikkim to West Bengal remains blocked due to landslides.

The Mirik-Sukhiapokhri road, a crucial link connecting several hill communities, remains completely blocked. The state of Sikkim has been largely cut off with most district roads closed except for the capital Gangtok.

Communication networks have also been severely affected with mobile towers in precarious conditions due to soil erosion beneath their foundations. Residents report difficulty in contacting their families and accessing emergency services.

Rescue Operations Face Multiple Challenges

The NDRF has deployed three specialized teams to the disaster-affected areas from Darjeeling, Siliguri and Alipurduar. Teams have successfully rescued over 105 people using boats and 55 people via zip lines in Jalpaiguri district. However, rescue operations continue to face significant challenges due to continuous rainfall, slippery terrain and blocked access routes.

Emergency control rooms have been established at both state and district levels with Chief Minister Banerjee sharing helpline numbers

·       +91-33-2214-3526

·       +91-33-2253-5185

·       Toll-Free numbers +91-86979-81070

·       1070

Government Response and Political Reactions

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to visit the affected areas on Monday, October 6 along with Chief Secretary Manoj Pant. She has announced compensation for victims’ families and promised government jobs for one family member, though specific amounts haven’t been disclosed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences on social media, stating: “Deeply pained by the loss of lives due to a bridge mishap in Darjeeling. The situation in Darjeeling and surrounding areas is being closely monitored in the wake of heavy rains and landslides”.

However, the opposition BJP has criticized the state government’s response. State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya called Chief Minister Banerjee “insensitive” for participating in the Durga Puja Carnival while people were suffering. Darjeeling MP Raju Bista has requested that the landslides be declared a “state-level disaster”.

Additional Flood Warning from Bhutan Heightens Concerns

Adding to the crisis, authorities in North Bengal are on high alert after Bhutan’s Tala Hydropower Dam began overflowing due to technical failure. The dam gates failed to open, causing river water to spill over the structure, threatening additional flooding in Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar districts.

Bhutan’s National Centre for Hydrology and Meteorology has formally alerted the West Bengal government to “prepare for eventualities” as the overflow could cause the Raidak River to swell rapidly.

Economic and Social Impact on Hill Communities

The disaster has devastated local livelihoods with many residents losing everything they owned. Mala Rawat, a resident of Dudhiya, expressed the desperation: “Whatever I earned, I invested in this house. Now if this house is not there, how will we survive.? You tell me”

The tourism industry, which forms the backbone of the local economy, faces massive losses during what should have been the peak post-Puja season. Hotels and businesses that depend on tourist footfall are struggling with stranded guests while dealing with their own infrastructure damage.

Weather Forecast Indicates Continued Risk

The India Meteorological Department continues to issue warnings for the region. Orange and red alerts remain in effect for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar districts. Weather officials predict that rainfall may continue until October 7 with possibilities of further landslides due to saturated soil conditions.

The forecast suggests that northern districts will experience more intense precipitation, raising fears of additional casualties and infrastructure damage. Emergency services remain on high alert with additional civil defense and state disaster response teams kept on standby.

Regional Impact Beyond West Bengal

The devastating weather system has affected neighboring regions as well. Nepal has reported 22 deaths in the past 36 hours due to similar weather conditions. Parts of Sikkim remain completely cut off, while Bhutan faces its own challenges with dam overflow situations.

The cross-border nature of this disaster highlights the need for regional cooperation in disaster management and early warning systems across the Himalayan region.

Conclusion: A Call for Resilience and Preparedness

The Darjeeling disaster of October 2025 serves as a stark reminder of nature’s unpredictable fury and the vulnerability of mountain communities. As rescue operations continue and the death toll may still rise, the focus must shift to both immediate relief and long-term disaster preparedness measures.

The heroic efforts of NDRF teams, local administration and volunteers demonstrate the resilience of communities in facing natural disasters. However, this tragedy also underscores the urgent need for better early warning systems, improved drainage infrastructure and sustainable development practices in ecologically sensitive hill regions.

For those wanting to help or stay updated on relief efforts, contact the official disaster management helplines. The people of Darjeeling and surrounding areas need our support as they rebuild their lives from this devastating natural calamity.
