In the high profile RG Kar case Sanjay Roy was sentenced to life imprisonment until death by the Sealdah Court. However this verdict has sparked widespread discontent, including from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who expressed dissatisfaction over the decision. The state government has now announced plans to appeal to the High Court demanding the death penalty.
Court’s Verdict and Controversy
On Monday the Sealdah Court ruled that Sanjay Roy’s crime did not fall under the ‘rarest of rare’ category which would warrant the death penalty. Instead the court sentenced him to life imprisonment and dismissed the CBI’s plea for capital punishment. The judge reasoned that while the crime was heinous it didn’t meet all the criteria for the harshest punishment.
Chief Minister’s Reaction
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee strongly disagreed with the verdict stating that the incident was indeed a ‘rarest of rare’ case. She highlighted that state police had successfully secured death sentences in similar cases before. Using social media she announced that the state government would move to the High Court challenging the Sealdah Court’s decision.
CBI and Defence Arguments
The CBI argued that Sanjay Roy’s actions against a medical professional caused significant harm to society and warranted the death penalty. On the other hand Roy’s defence lawyer pleaded for leniency stating that the convict deserved a chance for reform.
Sanjay Roy’s Statement
Before the sentencing Sanjay claimed innocence asserting that he was framed. He denied committing any crime and alleged that he was tortured during interrogation. “I have done nothing wrong. I have been falsely accused, If I had committed rape and murder, wouldn't the Rudraksha garland have been ruined.?” he said in court room.

Next Steps by the State Government
While the CBI has yet to confirm if they will appeal the state government has already decided to move to the High Court. The aim is to seek justice for the victim and ensure that such crimes are met with the strictest punishment to deter future offenders.
The RG Kar case has become a flashpoint in India’s judicial landscape reigniting debates about the death penalty and judicial discretion. As the state prepares to challenge the verdict all eyes are on the High Court to deliver a judgment that resonates with public sentiments and ensures justice.
