The chill of winter seems to have disappeared as dense fog blankets Bengal from the early morning. Visibility has dropped below 50 meters in many areas including Kolkata. A fog alert has been issued for 12 districts in South Bengal and six districts in North Bengal. Despite the current rise in temperature colder days might return soon.
Weather Update
The dense fog has disrupted daily life across South Bengal districts like Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, East and West Bardhaman, Birbhum, Murshidabad and Nadia. The fog also persists in six districts of North Bengal.
Due to repeated western disturbances, the chill in the air has been pushed away causing temperatures to rise. Today Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 16.8°C. However relief is expected soon as the weather department predicts the return of winter chill from Sunday. The mercury may drop by 4°C over the next 2-3 days.
Impact on Transportation
The dense fog has caused significant disruptions in transportation. Kolkata Airport faced visibility issues with levels dropping to just 50 meters. Morning flights were delayed or diverted to Ranchi and Bhubaneswar. Although a few flights resumed later operations remained far from normal.
Train services have also been affected, with several long-distance trains running late, including the Down Rajdhani and Duronto Express.

When Will the Chill Return.?
Meteorologists anticipate that winter will make a comeback once the western disturbances subside. By Sunday Bengal might experience a noticeable drop in temperature, and the seasonal chill could be back for the coming days.
As Bengal grapples with dense fog and rising temperatures residents can look forward to the return of winter soon. Travelers are advised to plan accordingly considering potential disruptions in flights and trains due to poor visibility.
