A tragic accident took place in Gosaba, South 24 Parganas during a cultural fair organized by the Kumirmari Gram Panchayat. The five day long event, filled with music, entertainment and sports activities took a dark turn when a young woman fell from a moving Ferris wheel.

Three young women from Kumirmari had boarded the electrically operated Ferris wheel for a ride. According to local sources they suddenly lost balance and fell from the ride. One of them, identified as Sayantani Mandal suffered severe injuries. She was immediately rushed to Bellevue Nursing Home in Kolkata, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Cause of the Accident, Negligence or Unfortunate Mishap.?

Authorities are investigating whether the accident occurred due to a technical failure of the ride or if the victims were attempting to take selfies when they lost balance. The owner of the Ferris wheel Amal Baidya has been arrested by the police for further questioning.

The Fair and Its Attractions

The cultural fair which included a football tournament, drew a massive crowd. On Monday night popular actress Rituparna Sengupta attended the event leading to an even larger turnout. The Ferris wheel one of the main attractions had long queues of eager visitors.

Unfortunately amidst the celebrations, Sayantani along with her friends Manasi and Tumpa Mandal met with the tragic accident while enjoying the ride. While her friends survived with injuries, Sayantani’s condition was critical. Despite medical efforts she passed away in the early hours of Tuesday.

The incident has cast a shadow of grief over the local community leaving residents in shock and mourning.
