Visva-Bharati University has once again decided to keep Santiniketan closed to the public on Dol (March 14th). Instead the Basanta Utsav (Spring Festival) will be held on March 11th at the Gour Prangan three days before Dol. The decision was taken in a meeting on Friday by university authorities.

Details & Context

Just like previous years Santiniketan will not host the traditional Basanta Utsav on Dol Purnima. The event will take place on March 11th not March 14th and entry will be restricted to students of Visva-Bharati. This decision was made to preserve the heritage campus as a single-day event attracts an overwhelming crowd.

University officials including acting Vice-Chancellor Vinay Kumar Soren faculty members and administrative staff participated in the meeting. According to the university’s spokesperson Atig Ghosh, “This is not like Poush Mela which lasts multiple days. Basanta Utsav draws over 5-6 lakh visitors in just a few hours which no university in the world can manage.”

Historical Context & Recent Changes

The last grand-scale Basanta Utsav was celebrated in 2019. In 2020 and 2021 the festival was cancelled due to COVID-19. Later under former Vice-Chancellor Bidyut Chakrabarty a small-scale event called ‘Basanta Bandana’ was organised but it had strict entry restrictions. This decision led to dissatisfaction among locals and tourists.

Despite Santiniketan gaining UNESCO World Heritage status in 2023 visitors will again miss out on the festival this year. Tourists who once flocked to witness Rabindranath Tagore’s vision of a colourful Holi celebration will have to settle for other attractions.

Impact Analysis

The move to shift the date and restrict public entry is aimed at reducing the massive footfall that could damage the heritage site. However this decision has also disappointed many locals, tourists and former students who cherish the open-to-all spirit of Basanta Utsav.

Santiniketan’s Basanta Utsav remains an exclusive event limited to students of Visva-Bharati University. While the heritage campus will be protected the festival’s charm and inclusivity seem to be diminishing. The question remains - will the traditional open-door celebrations ever return.?
