A sudden change in weather has been forecasted for this weekend across Bengal. According to the Alipore Meteorological Department heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, hailstorms and gusty winds will sweep through multiple districts including Kolkata on Sunday. The question remains, will Monday bring relief or more turbulent weather.?


Details & Context

Bengal is bracing for severe weather conditions starting from Saturday evening through Sunday morning. The Alipore Meteorological Department's regional director Somnath Dutta has confirmed that widespread rain along with thunderstorms and hail is expected across various districts.

A trough extending from Gangetic West Bengal to Telangana is causing a surge in moisture from the Bay of Bengal leading to the current weather pattern. As a result districts like Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, Bankura, West Midnapore, East and West Burdwan and Nadia are set to experience thunderstorms and gusty winds of 40-50 km/h.


Kolkata's Forecast

- Saturday night: Thunderstorms and rain likely.

- Sunday: Scattered showers with occasional moderate rainfall and cloudy skies. Wind speeds may reach 30-40 km/h.


Weather Forecast for South Bengal

- Saturday to Sunday: Heavy rain with thunderstorms and hail expected.

- Wind Speeds: 40-50 km/h in districts like Howrah, Hooghly, Bankura and Burdwan.

- Kolkata and other South Bengal regions may experience winds at 30-40 km/h.


Monday’s Outlook

From Sunday night to Monday morning gusty winds (30-40 km/h) and thunderstorms will continue across Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, East and West Midnapore, Jhargram, North and South 24 Parganas, East Burdwan, Murshidabad and Nadia. Scattered light rain may persist in other districts.


North Bengal Update

- Darjeeling: Light snowfall expected in higher altitudes until Monday.

- Sikkim: Snowfall likely with rain in adjoining hilly areas of Darjeeling and Kalimpong.

- Light to moderate rain will continue across Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar and both North and South Dinajpur.

Weather Alert

A ‘Yellow Alert’ has been issued for Saturday and Sunday warning of light rain and thunderstorms in North Bengal districts.

A ‘Orange Alert’ has been declared for Bankura, Jhargram, Purulia and West Midnapore expecting strong winds and heavy thunderstorms within the next 2-3 hours.
