A tragic accident unfolded at the Milan Mela fair in Kalyani, Nadia district when a gas balloon cylinder suddenly exploded claiming the life of a young woman and injuring three others including the balloon seller. The incident took place late Saturday night around midnight in the Ghoragacha area.

The victim has been identified as Muskan Mandal, a 24 year old woman. According to local sources the Milan Mela was being held at the Ghoragacha School ground where various stalls and activities were set up. Near a local club’s stall gas balloons were being sold when without warning the cylinder burst, causing severe injuries to four people. They were immediately rushed to Kalyani JNM Medical College and Hospital, where Muskan was pronounced dead. Among the injured is the balloon vendor, while the other two are undergoing treatment.

The incident has cast a shadow of grief over the area with locals expressing shock and sorrow. The Kalyani police have launched an investigation into the cause of the cylinder explosion, aiming to determine whether it was due to negligence or a technical fault.

Recent Mishap in Baruipur Fair.... Selfie Attempt Turns Dangerous

In a separate incident last December a fairground accident in Baruipur’s New Indian ground left a woman and a young girl severely injured. The accident occurred when they tried to take a selfie and record reels while riding a Ferris wheel at the month-long Milan Mela.

Despite the organisers charging an entry fee and ensuring safety measures the mishap happened as the two climbed onto the ride without their family members. While attempting to shoot a reel the woman and the 12-year-old girl lost balance and fell from the ride, sustaining serious injuries. According to the fair authorities the accident occurred when a rod came loose during the descent, allegedly due to the selfie attempt.

Investigation and Safety Concerns

Following these back to back incidents concerns about safety measures at local fairs have surged. Authorities are now reviewing the safety protocols of rides and stalls to prevent further accidents. The Kalyani police have assured that strict actions will be taken if any negligence is found.
