Salwan Momika became widely known in 2023 after his public acts of Quran desecration sparked strong reactions from Muslim - majority nations. His actions led to diplomatic tensions between Sweden and several Middle Eastern countries, prompting Sweden to tighten security measures.
Momika along with another individual named Salwan Najem faced charges for “inciting hatred against an ethnic or religious group.” Prosecutors stated that they burned the Quran and made offensive remarks about Muslims on multiple occasions, including an incident outside a mosque in Stockholm.
Swedish authorities considered Momika’s actions a legal matter and brought him to trial. Prosecutors relied on video evidence to support their case. However before the verdict could be delivered, the court announced that “one of the defendants has died,” referring to Momika.
