top-news

A woman lost her life when Israeli forces reportedly opened fire in a southern Lebanese border town according to Lebanon’s official media. The tragic incident occurred as residents attempted to return home just days before the Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire deadline.

Israeli Gunfire in Hula

Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) reported that Israeli soldiers fired into neighbourhoods of Hula killing a woman and injuring several others. The agency also claimed that Israeli forces had taken three civilians into custody during the incident.

The Lebanese army later warned residents to stay away from border areas where its troops had not yet fully deployed, citing safety concerns.

Ceasefire and Withdrawal Delays

A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah in place since November 27th, called for both sides to pull back forces over a 60-day period. However the withdrawal deadline was extended to February 18th after Israel failed to meet the initial terms.

The deal requires the Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers to take control of the southern region while Hezbollah moves north beyond the Litani River approximately 30 kilometers from the border. Despite these arrangements both Israel and Hezbollah have accused each other of violating the agreement.

Recent Escalations and Warnings

Since the truce was announced multiple clashes and attacks have continued. Lebanese authorities previously stated that 26 people were killed by Israeli fire when residents attempted to return to their homes near the border in late January.

Lebanon’s army warned civilians on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) against entering areas where the military has not yet completed deployment. The statement highlighted potential risks including unexploded ordnance and the presence of Israeli troops.

Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee also issued a warning stating that Israeli forces remain active in certain areas.

Ongoing Negotiations and Concerns

A high-ranking Israeli security official recently confirmed that Israel intends to complete its withdrawal as per the ceasefire agreement. However Lebanon’s parliamentary speaker Nabih Berri, claimed that Israel intends to retain control of five strategic locations beyond the withdrawal deadline.

This development has raised tensions with Lebanese leaders rejecting Israel’s reported plan to maintain its presence in disputed areas.

As the February 18th ceasefire deadline nears the situation remains tense. Lebanese authorities continue to warn residents against returning to border areas, fearing further violence and potential clashes. The future of the ceasefire remains uncertain with both sides blaming each other for violations.
