West Bengal Removes 'Yellow' Rule for Taxis...! Any Colour, Any Model are Allowed.

In a landmark decision the West Bengal government has scrapped the mandatory "Yellow Taxi" rule. Now taxis in any colour or model can operate across the state. This move brings Kolkata in line with cities like Delhi and Mumbai modernising its transport system.

Context

The iconic yellow Ambassador taxis once synonymous with Kolkata are now a thing of the past. The state’s transport department has revised the 1989 West Bengal Motor Vehicles Act lifting restrictions on taxi colours and models. Any commercial vehicle regardless of colour can now serve as a taxi, provided it meets licensing requirements.

Key Changes

- No Colour Restrictions: Taxis no longer need to be yellow, any colour is acceptable.

- Flexible Models: Vehicles of any make or model can now apply for taxi permits.

- Minimum Fleet Rule: Commercial operators must deploy at least 20 vehicles to qualify.

- Meter Requirement: All taxis must operate with functional meters.

This decision mirrors practices in cities like Delhi and Mumbai where commercial vehicles come in diverse colours and models. While some blue and white taxis have already been spotted in Kolkata, this move officially ends the monopoly of yellow taxis.

Why Yellow Taxis Are Disappearing

The decline of yellow taxis is also linked to pollution norms. Older taxis many of which are over 15 years old are being phased out as per environmental regulations. The iconic Ambassador once the backbone of Kolkata's taxi fleet is no longer in production, accelerating this transition.

Reactions

While many welcome the change as a modernisation effort others lament the loss of a cultural icon. Some argue that yellow taxis were more than just vehicles - they symbolised Kolkata’s identity. The government clarified that it is not banning yellow taxis but is simply modernising regulations to meet current needs.

Impact Analysis

This move is expected to increase the variety of taxis on the road offering passengers more options. It also encourages fleet operators to introduce new and eco-friendly vehicles, aligning with global transport standards.

Kolkata bids farewell to the era of mandatory yellow taxis, ushering in a more flexible and modern transportation system. This decision marks a significant step toward aligning the city’s transport policies with global practices while addressing environmental concerns.
