On the birthday of Dr. Abhaya a silent marcha was organised from her residence demanding justice for her tragic death at RG Kar Medical College. The young doctor was allegedly assaulted and murdered inside the medical college six months ago. Family members, artists, doctors and social activists joined the marcha urging authorities to take strict action.

Details & Context

The silent march commenced from Abhaya’s residence in Panihati, following Ambika Mukherjee Road and concluded at Kach Kal Mor. Organised by local social groups, the marcha saw participation from various sections of society including doctors, artists and general citizens. Notable personalities like Tamala Choudhury, Dulal Chakraborty and Abhijit Bhattacharya joined the demonstration.

Meanwhile another protest march was scheduled from College Street to RG Kar Medical College at 3 PM. Later in the evening a formal protest gathering took place at RG Kar where speakers emphasized the need for a fair investigation and stricter security in medical institutions.

Fund Misuse Allegations in ‘Justice for Abhaya’ Movement

The controversy surrounding the crowdfunding efforts for Abhaya’s justice took a new turn as the Bidhannagar Police Cyber Crime Unit summoned seven members of the West Bengal Junior Doctor's Front. A complaint filed by Raju Ghosh alleged that Rs 5000 donated for the cause was not properly accounted for and receipts were not issued. He also claimed that funds were collected under various names across social media platforms.

Doctor’s Response to Allegations

Dr.Aniket Mahato one of the summoned individuals refuted the allegations stating that all transactions were conducted through a joint account and a financial audit is underway. He asserted that the movement for Abhaya’s justice will continue despite these accusations which he believes are politically motivated.

As Abhaya’s family and supporters continue their fight for justice, the case remains a critical issue raising concerns about safety in medical institutions and transparency in activist funding. The coming weeks will determine how the authorities address both the justice movement and the financial controversy surrounding it.
