Historical Significance of Army Day

Army Day marks the historic transfer of command from General Sir Francis Butcher the last British Commander in Chief to Lieutenant General KM Cariappa the first Indian Army Chief, on January 15th in the year 1949. This day, honours the selfless contributions of Indian soldiers in safeguarding to the nation.

The Indian Army originally established on April 1st in the year 1895 under British rule as the British Indian Army was renamed the Indian Army post independence. Its legacy includes maintaining peace during the challenging period of partition and playing a pivotal role in nation building.

This year’s Army Day parade is hosted at the Southern Command headquarters in Pune. The event features marching contingents, mechanised columns and an impressive showcase of modern defence technology.
