In the third budget of Modi's government significant changes were announced regarding income tax exemptions, bringing a sigh of relief to the middle class, youth and women. The Finance Minister revealed that there will be no income tax on earnings up to Rs 12 lakh, offering considerable tax relief to the general public.

Context

In this year's budget one of the most anticipated announcements was about income tax. The Prime Minister had previously hinted that the budget would focus on empowering the middle class, youth and women. The Finance Minister confirmed that no income tax will be levied on earnings up to Rs 12 lakh. This announcement is a major benefit for the middle class marking a substantial increase in the income threshold for tax exemptions.

For individuals earning between Rs 12 lakh and Rs 16 lakh, a 10% income tax will apply. Those with earnings between Rs 16 lakh and Rs 20 lakh will be taxed at a rate of 15%. For earnings ranging from Rs 20 lakh to Rs 24 lakh the tax rate will be 25%. Finally for income exceeding Rs 24 lakh, the tax rate will be 30%.

Another important announcement was the increase in the standard deduction from Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000 which will provide additional savings. The Finance Minister also mentioned that senior citizens will benefit from higher tax exemptions, now up to Rs 1 lakh compared to the previous Rs 50,000.

Quotes

The Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasised, “This budget aims to provide relief to the middle class and promote growth, especially among the youth and women. It is a step toward financial empowerment.”

Additional Information

The new income tax structure also includes an increase in TDS exemptions, now applying to earnings up to Rs 6 lakh. The new tax bill expected to be introduced next week will aim to simplify the tax system further.

Impact Analysis

This income tax reform is expected to provide substantial relief to taxpayers especially those in the middle-income bracket. With the changes in both the old and new tax regimes individuals will have more disposable income, promoting consumption and savings.

The new tax relief announced in the third Modi government’s budget is seen as a significant step toward making the tax system more favourable for taxpayers. As the Finance Minister prepares to introduce the new income tax bill it’s clear that the government is committed to supporting the economic growth of the nation.
