During the budget debate in the Lok Sabha Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman strongly criticised the Trinamool Congress (TMC) stating that the party which once stood for grassroots development has now become a symbol of public suffering. She accused the ruling party in West Bengal of corruption, unemployment and economic decline while TMC leaders protested against her remarks.

Details & Context

A week after the Modi government presented its budget debates continue in Parliament. On Friday TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee criticised the budget calling it “Anti-Bengal.” In response Sitharaman took a strong stance against TMC, saying,

- “TMC means grassroots but today it represents the struggles and deprivation of common people. No jobs, no industries, no direction - that is the current state of Bengal under TMC rule.”

She also pointed out alleged corruption in West Bengal, citing

- 25 lakh fake job cards under the 100-day work scheme

- Rs 100 crore scam in the Mid-Day Meal program

- Growing ration mafia in the state

TMC’s Response

TMC leaders Kalyan Banerjee and Mahua Moitra opposed Sitharaman's remarks in Parliament. Kalyan Banerjee countered,

- “The Finance Minister is politically biased and vengeful. She has been repeating the same allegations for three years to justify depriving Bengal of funds.”

Mahua Moitra also lashed out, saying,

- “She keeps repeating the same broken record. More than 150 action reports and inspections have been submitted yet Bengal is still being denied funds. A Finance Minister should not make such politically motivated statements in Parliament.”

The debate in Parliament reflects the ongoing conflict between the BJP-led central government and the TMC-led West Bengal government with political tensions running high ahead of the upcoming elections.

Impact Analysis

The exchange highlights Bengal’s political landscape with TMC defending its governance while the BJP continues to accuse the state of financial mismanagement and corruption. The dispute over central funds remains a major concern for West Bengal affecting public services and development projects.

As the political battle intensifies Bengal’s future depends on how these allegations and counter-allegations translate into electoral impact. With the general elections approaching both parties are sharpening their narratives to win voter confidence.
