West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has hit back at allegations regarding past incidents of chaos in the Assembly. Addressing the opposition she admitted to tearing papers but denied any involvement in breaking furniture. The remarks come after BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari accused her of disrupting the Assembly in the past.
Mamata's Response to Suvendu's Allegations
In a heated Assembly session Mamata Banerjee defended her past actions, stating
“Yes, I tore papers but I never broke any furniture. At that time I was alone, facing multiple political parties. I was not even allowed to speak.”
Her remarks were in response to Suvendu Adhikari’s claim that Mamata had once led vandalism inside the Assembly. He pointed to an incident from 2006 when TMC leaders allegedly caused damage in the lobby.
The 2005 Parliament Uproar
Mamata recalled an incident from 2005 when she was in Parliament protesting against illegal immigration issues. She admitted to throwing papers towards the Speaker’s chair but insisted it was due to frustration over being repeatedly silenced.
“I was all alone in Parliament. BJP, Congress and CPM were united against me. I had 39% of votes but was not allowed to speak,” she stated justifying her protest.
The 2006 Assembly Controversy
Suvendu Adhikari referred to an incident from 2006 when Mamata and her party were protesting against being stopped from entering Singur. Allegedly TMC members caused damage inside the Assembly building. Responding to this Mamata clarified,
“That day my party was agitated but I did not break anything. I was there to meet the Leader of the Opposition, Partha Chatterjee. If needed, I can provide proof.”
Previously, she had claimed that her shoes were even snatched during that incident. The CPM however countered that while Mamata may not have physically broken anything destruction took place in her presence.
