top-news

Kolkata’s East West Metro services will be completely shut down from February 8th to March 24th 2025 to implement a high tech signalling system. This upgrade is a key step toward seamless metro connectivity between Sealdah and Esplanade promising smoother and safer travel for passengers.

Major Suspension Announced

The East West Metro also known as the Green Line will halt operations for 1.5 months to facilitate the installation of an advanced high definition signalling system. This will cover both Green Line 1 and Green Line 2 aiming to connect Sealdah to Esplanade seamlessly.

Upgraded Technology for Better Service

Kolkata Metro has partnered with an international company to install a world class automatic signalling system. This modernisation will enhance operational efficiency and safety across the corridor ensuring a smoother journey for commuters.

Trial Runs and Inspection Updates

The trial runs on the Sealdah to Esplanade stretch are expected to begin in January. Kolkata Metro General Manager P. Uday Kumar Reddy recently inspected the section signalling that the project is in its final stages. After the signalling system upgrade the route will undergo fitness tests followed by approval from the Commissioner of Railway Safety.

Transformative Impact on Commuters

Once operational, the East to West Metro will connect Howrah Maidan with Salt Lake Sector 5 making it the city's first underwater metro corridor. Currently services are divided into two segments, Howrah Maidan to Esplanade and Sealdah Sector 5. The completion of this corridor will bring the entire 16 km stretch into operation significantly reducing travel time and congestion.
