A shocking incident unfolded at Konnagar Super Market on Thursday night when a street ‘Jhalmuri’ vendor was caught secretly taking indecent photos of a woman. The accused, identified as the son of a former CPI(M) leader, he was immediately apprehended by the police after the woman raised an alarm.
Incident Details
On Thursday around 8:30 PM a young woman was standing near the Konnagar Super Market with her sister. Unbeknownst to her a street vendor operating a ‘Jhalmuri’ stall nearby was secretly taking photos of her back side. The woman’s sister noticed the man’s behaviour and alerted her leading to a confrontation. When the victim tried to seize the accused’s phone he allegedly resisted and pulled her hand. Local residents intervened and detained the vendor later calling the police.
Background of the Accused
The accused identified as Rana Indra is the son of Basudev Indra who was a former CPI(M) chairman. Local shopkeepers revealed that this was not Rana’s first offence. According to them, he has a history of inappropriate behaviour, especially under the influence of alcohol. Despite repeated warnings from the market community, he continued his misconduct often targeting female customers at his stall.
Official Statements
Swapan Das the current chairman of the Konnagar Municipality criticised the incident, stating, “CPI(M) claims to stand for women’s rights but incidents like these reflect their true character.”
On the other hand CPI(M)’s Hooghly district committee member Arnab Das distanced the party from the accused, clarifying, “This individual has no connection with our party. While his father is a respected member of our party, his actions are personal, and the law should take its course.”
Eyewitness Accounts
A local vendor Lakshmi Kant Adhikari shared, “Rana often creates trouble after drinking. Many women have stopped visiting this area due to his behaviour. Despite repeated complaints, he never mended his ways.”
The victim narrated her ordeal, saying, “I frequently visit the market and often buy from his stall. This time he was secretly taking my photos. When I protested, he shamelessly admitted he enjoys taking pictures of women. It was terrifying, but the locals came to my rescue.”
