Commuters on the Howrah line are facing disruptions again as the Eastern Railway has announced more train cancellations and schedule changes for Sunday January 19th 2025. This is part of an ongoing traffic and power block for infrastructure upgrades.

Sunday Cancellations

Several local trains are cancelled due to operational work. Notable cancellations include

Train No 37323: UP Howrah to Tarakeswar.

Train No 37334: Down Tarakeswar to Howrah.

Schedule Changes

Adjusted departure times for some trains include

- Train No 37749: UP Bandel to Katwa Local departure time from Bandel 12:15 PM  – Now departing at 12:45 PM instead of 12:15 PM.

- Train No 37374: Down Goghat to Howrah Local departure time from Goghat 1:10 PM – New departure time is 1:20 PM delayed from 1:10 PM.

Extended Disruptions

From December 21^th, 2024 to February 1^st, 2025 over 60 local trains have been cancelled on the Howrah branch due to the construction of two new lanes on the Benaras Road Overbridge. Affected routes include

- Howrah Bandel Howrah Local.

- Howrah Sheoraphuli Howrah Local.

- Howrah Belur Math Howrah Local.

Sealdah Line Maintenance

Eastern Railway has also announced significant maintenance work on the Sealdah line scheduled for four consecutive days. This includes a “100 hour power block” for replacing the steel girders of old overbridges at stations like Dum Dum Jn and Dankuni Jn.

Reason for Maintenance

- The bridges built nearly a century ago during British rule have deteriorated with time.

- Replacement with RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) structures is expected to improve train speeds and reduce maintenance challenges.

These upgrades aim to modernise railway infrastructure ensuring safer and faster train operations. However the ongoing work is causing temporary inconvenience for commuters.

While these disruptions may inconvenience passengers in the short term the infrastructure improvements promise long term benefits for railway operations. Travellers are advised to check train schedules and plan their journeys accordingly.
